New Manchester United signing Tyrell Malacia reveals why people call them ‘The Pitbull’
New Manchester United signing Tyrell Malacia is called ‘The Pitbull’ for his playing style and character when he steps on the pitch. The Dutch national admits to being “a different person” when he steps foot on the football field.
Malacia was signed from Feyenoord in a surprise move by the Red Devils. The left-back has been involved in United’s pre-season tour in Asia and Australia.
When asked why he’s called the nickname via the club’s official website, Malacia revealed that his personality changes when playing.
“I’ve always been like this. I’m always smiling and, yeah, that’s just me. But, when I’m on the pitch, I’m a different person. Yes, yes [I am able to turn it on and off when I am playing].”
Fans who’ve seen the Dutch national play will know that off it, the player has a smile on his face. But when up against the opponent, the 22-year-old is a fierce competitor. His work rate is also commendable.
Erik ten Hag now has three options for the left-back position at his disposal. Luke Shaw has been our first choice full-back for a while now. The former Southampton defender has improved over the years, but injuries have been an issue for the 27-year-old.
Alex Telles was signed by United a couple of seasons back. The Brazilian has been an adequate backup for Shaw. Going forward, the 29-year-old has his moments. But fans feel the former Porto left-back needs to improve defensively.
Malacia has been one of the three major new signings this summer. The other two are Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen.
Ten Hag has decided to focus on our defence, it seems. And spectators inside Old Trafford will be excited to see a different backline in the upcoming campaign after the disappointing performances that we put in last season.
