As relayed by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick had a message for the incoming head coach in the summer, saying that they need to figure out how they want to play and what players he needs before moving to other pertinent issues.

The German took over the reins of the club late last year, succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the new head coach of the side. However, he was only offered the job on an interim basis until the summer, when he is expected to give way to a new permanent manager.

The former RB Leipzig boss is tasked with guiding the team to a top-four finish this season in order to secure Champions League football next term, but as things stand, things are not going swimmingly for him as the side sits seventh in the Premier League table.

With Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United standing in the way of fourth place, Rangnick has no other option but to ensure that the team picks up consecutive wins until the end of the campaign and hope that it is enough to get them to where they want to be.

“What do we need?”

Regardless of where the Red Devils finish at the end of the season, the 63-year-old will depart the club as manager so that a new face comes in to pick up the reins once again. United are hoping to usher in a new era in Manchester, with the side competing for glory once again.

Rangnick had a message for the new coach, saying that he needs to first identify how he wants the team to play and what kind of players he needs before jumping to other questions like DNA, speed, physicality, and tempo that they play at.

“Whenever the new head coach is clear, it has to be: how does he want to play and what kind of players do we need? Then we come back to DNA, speed, physicality, tempo. What do we need?”

The German manager inherited Solskjaer’s squad when he took over, and had to make do with the current crop of players at his disposal and work out a way to make the best of his resources. Thus far, he has done a fair job in the time he has been here, although there have been far too many frustrating draws that one would like.

FA Cup and Champions League exits have also come under Rangnick, although some would argue that the players have let down the manager, rather than vice versa. Even in the January transfer window, the head coach did not bring anyone in – perhaps the club wanted to wait until they appoint a permanent boss before taking such big decisions.

Whatever the problems are at the moment, the incumbent United manager is right about the incoming new coach having a clear vision of how he wants to play and whether he has the right kind of personnel. For far too long, we had an eclectic mix of stars in the squad, assembled by managers prior.

This has led to some instability and imbalance in the team, with some positions being far too weak for us to compete with other teams at the very top. This needs addressing, along with a fair few other issues within the side, and whoever the new boss is, they have quite the challenge ahead of them. It is exactly why the Manchester club need to be very careful in offering the job to the right man.
