Fabrizio Romano relays Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s message about a summer rebuild
Speaking in his post-match conference after his side’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool last night, as relayed by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed plans for a summer rebuild at the club.
United were second-best against a Liverpool side that carved them apart with ease, and the difference in quality between the two sides could be seen during the game at Anfield. The Merseyside club previously beat their arch-rivals 5-0 at Old Trafford earlier in the season.
The Red Devils were without some key players in important areas, missing Cristiano Ronaldo, Fred, Scott McTominay, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw for the match. Their absences proved crucial, as the Manchester side finished the game with one shot on target and barely any possession.
The Premier League giants are currently chasing a top-four spot in the league table by the end of the season, in order to qualify for the Champions League next term. However, the Liverpool loss saw them slip further behind in their quest, with United now in sixth place.
“Maybe ten new players will come”
The Old Trafford outfit wants to put the current campaign’s disappointment and look forward to the summer, as the club expects a new manager to come in and take over from Rangnick once his tenure as interim boss expires at the end of the season.
Romano quoted the German, who confirmed plans of a squad overhaul in the upcoming summer transfer window ahead of a rebuild, suggesting that maybe ten new players could be snapped up.
“There will be a rebuild here. Six, seven, maybe ten new players will come”
Last season saw the Manchester side finish runners-up in the Premier League, building expectations that they could go one step further this term and perhaps win the league title. To aid this, players like Ronaldo, Varane, and Jadon Sancho were brought in last summer in an exciting transfer window for fans.
However, the reality is that despite these additions, we are in danger of missing out on a UCL spot next season and are stuttering towards booking a place in either the UEFA Europa League or UEFA Conference League. A serious push from the players is needed for that in the remaining weeks of the current campaign.

Aside from the obvious gulf in quality between the composition of teams as was evident from the Liverpool game last night, United are also in need of a rebuild due to the fact that up to six players are set to become free agents in the summer if their contracts aren’t renewed.
Not just this, perhaps the new manager coming in may deem a few existing stars as surplus to his requirements, which will prompt more departures from the first team. Therefore, a summer rebuild involving maybe ten new players may be a necessity rather than a priority.
