Fabrizio Romano reveals Manchester United plans to discuss a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United are set to discuss a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea in the next few months as a reward for his consistent performances for the club.

The keeper, who joined United from Atletico Madrid as a teenager in 2011, has arguably been the best player that the side has had over the past decade. At a time when other stars have been underwhelming and the team have not played well, de Gea has been a shining light.

This season as well, the Spaniard has kept us in games and shielded the defence effectively, pulling off extraordinary stops that make the crowd gasp in disbelief and applaud his quick reflexes.

He is firmly established as the club’s number 1, and has been since he took over the gloves on his debut for the Old Trafford outfit. Despite the side having talented keepers like Sergio Romero and Dean Henderson giving him competition, de Gea has stood strong and kept his place in the starting XI.

“It hasn’t been an issue this season actually”

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has also trusted him to be his team’s guardian between the sticks, playing him in Premier League and Champions League games since the German was given charge of the side late last year.

Speaking to Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy, as relayed by Romano, Rangnick said that he had no issue this season with de Gea, who the German described as outstanding since his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams.

“For me, David de Gea has been outstanding since I arrived. It hasn’t been an issue this season actually.”

Given his importance to the team and his extraordinary performances on the pitch, there can be little surprise about Romano revealing that the United are planning to discuss a new contract with their goalkeeper in the coming months.

United fans will not complain about the 31-year-old being handed a new deal, with the Spain international being a crowd favourite. He has been the reason why United managed a few top-four finishes over the past couple of years, and the hope is that he can guide them to yet another UCL qualification spot this season.

The former Atletico Madrid man is currently tied down at Old Trafford until 2023, with an option to extend the deal by another year. Although there is nothing concrete to suggest that he is looking to depart Manchester, the safer approach would be to get him to commit to a new deal as soon as possible.

On the pitch, he looks focused and back to his best- even if the team in front of him keeps on hitting new lows. Keeping here beyond 2023 means we have a world-class goalie with us in the team, and it is one less position to worry about in the transfer market, at least for the time being.

A new manager is expected in the summer once Rangnick’s tenure as interim boss expires, and so de Gea’s future at the club could yet hinge on whether he appreciates the keeper’s qualities as the past managers have. It remains to be seen whether this position on offering the Spaniard a new contract changes beyond the summer.
