Raphael Varane joined Manchester United in one of the biggest transfer stories this summer. The 28-year-old defender left Real Madrid to join the Old Trafford outfit in a £41million move.

As expected, Varane is partnering Harry Maguire in the heart of United’s defence and has done a good job so far. Given his status as the Bernabeu and his trophy cabinet, he was never going to settle for a place on the bench.

But with different leagues, come different challenges. Varane enjoyed a brief spell with Lens in France before sealing a move to Real Madrid in 2011.

Since then, he has won numerous trophies with Los Blancos while also leading France to a FIFA World Cup win in 2018. Having never played for an English club before in his life, he was bound to notice some stark differences in the type of football being played on the island.

Varane enjoying PL experience

Not one to back down from challenges, Varane claims that he is enjoying the intensity and competition in the Premier League. (Interview on Premier League World, via Manchester Evening News)

“It’s a new challenge for me; it is a different competition and a different mentality. All of it is new for me and I enjoy it every day, so this experience is exciting. I think it is different football. The rhythm is very different and you repeat a lot of those rhythms.”

After claiming that Premier League had faster football with more goals, Varane added that he can still improve on the pitch. Already a world-class defender, it’s hard to see where exactly the Frenchman thinks he is lacking.

“Maybe I can do better. I just want to help the team, do my best and improve who I am on the pitch. I just want to do my best, that is my objective and my mentality.”

Varane led France to the final of the UEFA Nations League earlier this week after he played in their 3-2 semi-final win over Belgium. Les Bleus will now take on Spain in the showpiece final on Sunday.
