Transfer News: Newcastle want Manchester United ace Anthony Martial in January

Stretty News claim that a club source has informed them of Newcastle United’s interest in signing Manchester United striker, Anthony Martial, in the January transfer window.

The French striker is struggling for gametime at Old Trafford after a poor last season and due to the recent introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo within the first-team fray.

Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, and recently, Anthony Elanga, have all come forth as long-term centre-forward options for Man United. Amidst this, the Magpies could hand Martial an escape route in January.

The report mentions that Newcastle’s takeover will make them a force in the transfer market. Backed by their new Saudi owners, the Toons are reportedly interested in Nick Pope of Burnley and Man United’s Martial.

Moreover, the club have apparently made contact with the Red Devils and the Frenchman’s representatives over a potential move in January. While the club may not be able to recoup all the money they spent on the former Monaco man, they would seek a figure as close to £54million for him.

Newcastle’s interest in Martial does make sense. They can offer him a considerably better chance at getting regular starts and the club would itself want to act in January in order to ensure their survival this season.

The 25-year-old was signed by Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford amidst much hype. While he showed his talent in the 2019/20 season, he failed to maintain that run in the following season.

And with the Red Devils seeking their first trophy since 2017 and their first PL title since 2013, it is unlikely that Solskjaer would want to make any compromises upfront. A move for Martial, if permanent, would make sense for all parties involved in the deal.
