Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester Evening News), Raphael Varane claimed that he believes Manchester United are on an ‘upward curve’ despite recent performances.
The Red Devils are currently sitting in the Top 4, just a point below leaders Liverpool. However, the Old Trafford outfit failed to top the table on the weekend after their loss to Aston Villa.
Chelsea had dropped points to Manchester City while Liverpool were held to a draw by newly-promoted Brentford. Thus, the opportunity was there, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co. could not grab it. The Villa loss came just after United were knocked out in the EFL Cup by West Ham United.
The Manchester-based club are now heading into an important UEFA Champions League game against Villarreal on Wednesday night. Summer signing Raphael Varane has, thus, come out and explained that the Red Devils are on an ‘upward curve’ and that there is a lot of potential in the squad.
The 28-year-old told reporters in the pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“What I’ve been able to see is, with my teammates, there’s a lot of quality in our squad and our team. We’ve got huge potential, I’m convinced of it. We’re working really hard, we’re working really well in training. I think we’re improving all the time. Since the start of the season, I think we’re on a positive, upward curve.
“There’s everything there in the right place. Just concentrate on the little details, keep believing and have that positive mentality.”

Varane himself has found it tough in England as he has only managed to keep one clean sheet since partnering with club captain Harry Maguire in the centre-back role. The Frenchman’s involvement will be key against Villarreal due to his experience of playing against the Spanish outfit and Maguire’s inability to play in the game due to injury.
