The Red Devils gave Cristiano Ronaldo his much-awaited second debut against the Magpies as the No.9, with Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood covering the flanks. Unfortunately, Cavani was unavailable for their fixture against the Magpies. Solskjaer explained the Uruguayan’s absence by stating:
“He’s still not ready….He got a little knock in training, so hopefully won’t be too long.”
Cavani played an important part in Manchester United’s attack last season, helping the team to a second-place finish in the Premier League and the finals of the UEFA Europa League. Yet to feature meaningfully this term, he forfeited the No. 7 jersey so that Ronaldo could wear the legendary jersey once again.
Ronaldo’s homecoming broke another PL record. He has returned again to the England side after a gap of 12 years and 118 days which beats the previous record-holder, ex-Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney, who had a gap of 11 years 155 days between 2002 and 2013.
New recruit Raphael Varane also started this match for the Red Devils alongside Harry Maguire. And it was an afternoon to remember for the Red Devils’ faithful, with Ronaldo marking his return with a two-goal salvo as the team romped to a 4-1 win.
Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard were also on target while Mason Greenwood impressed yet again. Sancho, though, looked a bit scratchy, but all will be forgiven after Ronaldo’s triumphant return, highlighting the attacking depth now at Solskjaer’s disposal.

As for Cavani, the 34-year-old is a thorough professional and respected by the management and others in the dressing room. He brought a lot of value to the squad last season and the manager will be hoping to have him back at the earliest possible.
