Edinson Cavani sends heartfelt farewell message to Manchester United fans ahead of summer exit

Edinson Cavani has sent a heartfelt farewell message to Manchester United fans ahead of his impending exit at the end of this season. He will be leaving with mixed feelings following a two-year spell at Old Trafford, having left Paris Saint-Germain to move to England in 2020.

Cavani started really strong at Man United, having enjoyed a splendid first campaign, which quickly made him a fan favourite. His work ethic and willingness to defend from the front, coupled with his attacking potency, had left the supporters delighted with his displays.

“I sincerely have nothing but words of gratitude towards the fans and supporters of Manchester United. Honestly, they have shown me a lot of respect from the very first moment I arrived. I really am very grateful, and I’ll be leaving here with a happy memory of that affection they showed me and always displayed.”

Speaking in an interview with the club’s media (h/t Manchester United official website), the Uruguayan international is thankful for the support he has received from the fanbase. That being said, Cavani also gave an honest assessment of his second term by conveying that he is disappointed with how things turned out and would have loved to depart on a high note.

“One of the things that has left me with a slightly bitter taste is that when we had a highly enjoyable and pretty decent [2020/21] season, we weren’t able to have the supporters along with us. And now, this season, with the fans coming back into the grounds and stadiums, I haven’t really been able to have the kind of campaign, if I’m being honest, on a personal front that I would really have liked.”

Cavani will be appreciated for his best moments!

It is quite unfortunate how injuries have hampered the 35-year-old’s ability to perform in the best way possible this term. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival did not help either, but one would have expected Cavani to play a more prominent role if he was available for selection.

It is good to see that Cavani has given his honest thoughts on the struggles, indicating that his farewell message is quite genuine indeed. The fans would also be grateful for the joys he has given them, particularly in the previous season.

Even if the former PSG man has endured a tough campaign this time around, no one can take away the impressive displays he showcased throughout the last term. His 17 goals and six assists from 39 matches last season are quite impressive indeed, factoring into account how the Mancunians were not at their best under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at times.

The supporters would love to see Cavani succeed elsewhere when he eventually departs this summer. At the same time, the board must prepare for his eventual departure as we do not have any reliable options to take the mantle from the next campaign onwards.

Ronaldo could follow suit as he is growing older by the minute, while Marcus Rashford has largely struggled throughout this term. Anthony Martial is set to leave as well, making it necessary to find a reliable replacement for Cavani.

He has arguably served his purpose. When he came here from PSG, no one would have expected him to be a long-term solution at his age. The Uruguayan would go down as a player that United fans remember fondly, and there are very few things in football better than that.
