David de Gea not shy to commit his future to Manchester United for ‘a lot of years’
Speaking in an interview on the official club website (h/t Daily Mail), David de Gea expressed his pride at representing Manchester United for so many years, and hinted that he will stay at the club for a few more years.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been United’s No. 1 choice between the sticks since his move from Atletico Madrid 10 years ago. But the 30-year-old has recently faced competition from Dean Henderson for starting spots.
The English goalkeeper returned to the Red Devils last year after a stellar showing while on loan at Sheffield United. And there were times last season where it was evident that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was favouring Henderson over the Spaniard.
Nevertheless, the Spain international reclaimed his position and ended the season having played 26 league matches. However, that was the lowest tally of Premier League appearances he has ever made as a United player in a decade.
De Gea wants MUFC stay
The report goes on to say that the club even felt like they had made a mistake offering him a bumper £375,000-a-week contract, especially after seeing Henderson’s displays.
However, the former Los Colchoneros stopper has stated how he would like to be at Old Trafford for a number of years. His current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023.
“But you have to live in the present, I think I still have a lot of years ahead of me at the club, I’m excited about that, feeling strong and I’m very keen to do well. I feel great in myself, high in confidence and I think it should be – and has to be – an important season for all of us.”
