Manchester United will try to sign Leon Goretzka for free next season
According to transfer news from Express, Manchester United will try to sign Leon Goretzka for free in 2022. The German midfielder is set to be out of contract from Bayern Munich next season. United have kept him on their radar in case of a possible departure from Paul Pogba.
If one were to look at the midfield options United have at their disposal, not many can be labelled as world-class. Apart from Bruno Fernandes and Pogba, the rest leave a lot to be desired. United have often felt that pinch when Pogba has been injured. Add to that his future is the subject of speculation, putting Fernandes in a tight situation.
Leon Goretzka is a name that United are keeping tabs on, in the event Pogba chooses to leave the club. The stocky midfielder is one of the best in his position in the Bundesliga for Bayern as well as for the national side. Bayern are facing a similar situation to what United are facing with Pogba.
The 26-year-old is also in the last year of his current deal. He is said to be asking for a sizable €20m per season wage packet which is way more than the €10-12m-a-year that Bayern are prepared to offer. United have put in a contract offer that matches his salary expectations to sign him on a free transfer next season.

Goretzka comes with a different skill set than Pogba. The German is a physical presence on the pitch contributing to each area in equal measure. Provided Pogba leaves, United should try to push for Goretzka as he is reaching his prime years which would help in replacing the Frenchman.
