Manchester United continue to keep an eye on Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka
As per Sky Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United continue to keep Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on their list for a possible summer move.
A couple of weeks ago, Daily Mail revealed that the German champions are prepared to sell the midfielder amidst interest from United.
The latest from Plettenberg is that the player wants to stay in Munich but is not guaranteed a regular starting spot as Thomas Tuchel is planning to give the midfield combination of Joshua Kimmich and Konrad Laimer a go. The former Chelsea boss is also looking at signing a defensive midfielder.
West Ham United of all people are in the race to sign Goretzka. One would say that is an ambitious link of some order.
In Bayern’s latest high-profile pre-season game against Liverpool, which they won 4-3, Tuchel started with a midfield pivot of Kimmich and Laimer.
Goretzka’s contract with the Bavaria club runs until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt). They may look to cash him now and increase the funding for potentially signing Harry Kane from Tottenham.
The German international is a highly-talented midfield player who can operate in a lot of positions. For Bayern, he mostly played as a box-to-box midfielder with an eye for a goal or two. In 179 appearances in all competitions for them, he scored 34 goals and assisted 35 (Transfermarkt).
We know that United are also interested in signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. If we compare the two targets, Goretzka would offer more going forward without losing much on the defensive side.
