France boss Didier Deschamps comes to the defence of Manchester United star Paul Pogba
According to Manchester Evening News, France national team manager Didier Deschamps refused to be drawn into a debate surrounding the form of Manchester United star Paul Pogba.
The 28-year-old is on his day one of the best players in the world. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for United fans, who have not often seen the best of their star midfielder.
A rather inconsistent performer for United, Pogba is a beast unleashed while on duty for his country.
While he may have had a forgettable outing against Hungary, he was the man of the match in France’s impressive win against Germany. Deschamps refused to be drawn into a comparison on the player’s form at the club level.
“I don’t like to say what is happening at club football, be it talking about Solskjaer or any other coach. Players are different, coaches are different.”
Perhaps Deschamps was being diplomatic with his take but it makes no sense for him to try to explain the role pogba plays in another manager’s tactics. As the France manager, his interest is limited to how the player performs on the international stage. It is fair to say that he will have few complaints if any.
“What’s important for me is only what he’s doing for the French team and the importance he has on the pitch.”
Team over individual
There is little doubt that the tactics at United are not kept in line with Pogba’s strengths. The player himself stroked the flames claiming that United’s tactics largely constrained his attacking prowess. (h/t Manchester Evening News)
While that may be true, Pogba will do well at times to do what is expected of him tactically rather than expect the team to cater to his strengths. Football is a team sport and one will have to don a role that may not put them in the limelight.
