Manchester United plan pre-season fixtures ahead of the 2021/22 season
According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are planning out their pre-season ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 season.
The Red Devils look set to play the majority of their fixtures in the United Kingdom this summer. It marks a considerable difference from the usual tours that have taken us across the world.
Matches abroad have however not been ruled out. However, it depends on the COVID-19 situation and could be limited to mainland Europe. This is due to the Government restrictions and guidelines still in place with regards to foreign travel.
Interestingly, United are considering two games against Liverpool, which are likely to be played at Old Trafford and Anfield. Trips to Scandinavia and Malta could also be in consideration.
While the plans for the game against Liverpool are still under consideration, United are also looking at other opponents. Who we will eventually face remains to be seen.
The Red Devils could benefit from a proper pre-season this time around. We had just one game against Aston Villa last season, thanks to the extended 2019/20 campaign. It is fair to say that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer found it a plausible excuse for our poor start to the season.
United’s most recent UK-based pre-season friendly was when they drew 1-1 with AC Milan in August 2019, before winning on penalties. The game was held at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
The club will make an official announcement confirming their pre-season games in the coming weeks. The fixtures are likely to begin in mid-July, with the European Championship only finishing on July 11.
