Manchester United legend David Beckham was responsible for wrecking the team bus in 1998
Speaking on the United Podcast (h/t Mirror), former Manchester United defender, David May has named club legend David Beckham as the one responsible for damaging the team bus in 1998.
A prankster, Beckham led his fellow Red Devils stars on a paintballing spree that caused the damage. Along with Ryan Giggs, he arranged for the players to enjoy a game of paintball.
It is fair to say that the competitive nature of our squad must have shone through. The players were all left black and blue at the end of the session.
“Becks and Giggsy went to a paintballing shop and they come out with these £500 paintballing guns – brand new, like silver revolvers they were.”
May admits that in the end the bus was wrecked with dents. There was no other go but to respray the vehicle thanks to the antics.
“We peppered the bus. The bus had to be resprayed because there were dents.”
Dutch star Jordi Cruyff may not have had the storied career of his father. However, he appears to have been the standout player in the squad when it came to paintball.
1998 was clearly a memorable year for Beckham. His performance against Argentina in the World Cup proved to be a turning point in his career. He was given a red card for kicking Diego Simeone when the score was tied 2-2.
Argentina went on to win the game on penalties, booting England out of the tournament. Upon his return home, he was met with harsh criticism making him public enemy number one.
