Transfer News: Manchester United need to fork out £20m for Sam Johnstone
According to The Sun (h/t Metro), Manchester United will need to fork out £20m to sign West Bromwich Albion star Sam Johnstone.
Johnstone was one of the better performers in what was a poor season for West Brom. Having been consigned to relegation, the 28-year-old is emerging as one of the club’s most saleable assets.
The shot-stopper came through the United academy before going on to make a name for himself elsewhere. He failed to make a single senior appearance during his time at Old Trafford.
United have already agreed to sign another former goalkeeper, Tom Heaton this summer. The veteran ace will join the club on a Bosman. However, unlike him, the Red Devils will need to fork out a significant fee for Johnstone.
United’s pursuit of the 28-year-old will gather pace should one of David De Gea or Dean Henderson leave this summer. Johnstone is coming off a good season that recently ended with him being named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the Euros.
The Baggies are determined to bounce straight back into the Premier League. They consider Johnstone crucial to the club’s hopes and are keen to keep hold of him
Johnstone only has a year to run on his deal and is said to be keen on a return to the Theatre of Dreams. Whether it will eventually come to fruition remains to be seen.

West Ham United are also keen on Johnstone and could make a move for him this summer. Interestingly, United have a sell-on clause of around 15% inserted into Johnstone’s contract with West Brom.
Whether it is something we can use to our advantage remains to be seen.
