“Got to be brave” – Reputed pundit slams this Man United star for Everton fiasco

Jamie Redknapp holds De Gea responsible for late equaliser by Everton

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has blasted Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea for being at fault for two of the three goals Everton scored in the thrilling 3-3 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

United let a two-goal lead slip early in the second half and allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to equalise in the final minute of stoppage time. That saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lose valuable ground on pace-setters Man City in the title race.

The Spaniard parried Calvert-Lewin’s strike straight into the path of Abdoulaye Doucoure to tap home, allowing Everton to reduce the deficit. De Gea’s poor night continued as he struggled to come out of his line to stop the striker from scoring a last-gasp leveller off a free-kick late in the game.

Reflecting on the game, Redknapp has held the 30-year-old responsible for two of Everton’s three goals in the second half. The pundit has come down hard on the United shot-stopper for failing to show enough authority.

He told Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail):

“De Gea as a keeper has got to take everything. He’s got to be brave and assess the situation. If he comes out with authority I have no doubt he wins this.

“He was at fault for the first goal and certainly at fault there. But it’s a great bit of forward play by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.”

Indeed, it’s hard to argue against Redknapp as De Gea deserves a fair bit of criticism for his lacklustre display against Everton. In truth, however, it was more of a collective failure at the back that cost United two crucial points at home.

The 30-year-old has had his fair share of highs and lows throughout the campaign.

As per Squawka, De Gea’s save percentage of 60.9 stands second-worst among all PL goalkeepers to have played more than 15 games this term. Only Wolves’ Rui Patricio (59.7) has a lower save percentage than the Spaniard.
