Phil Jones could leave Manchester United in January but the Red Devils want £20m for the defender

Times have been tough for English defender Phil Jones over the past season and a half at Manchester United.

The Englishman is yet to make an appearance for Manchester United this season and started a couple of Premier League games for us last season.

The 28-year-old was also left out of our Champions League squad but he could leave Old Trafford in the January window (h/t Sun).

The Sun adds that United are looking at £20m to sell Jones off in the winter window. Fulham were keen on the Englishman last season and there has been interest from other clubs too, according to the report.

Big contract for Jones

The £20m price tag could be a problem to get Jones off our hands (h/t Sun). Jones only signed a new deal last year and is contracted with us until 2023.

The Englishman earns around £100,000 per week without bonuses and is expected to feature only in cup games this season (h/t Sun).

United have struggled to get the back working this season. We sent Chris Smalling off to AS Roma but failed to add more quality in central defence.

The Red Devils have conceded 12 goals in four Premier League games and we are 15th in the standings.

Jones has found games hard to come by and his injury record has been a problem for him too. Letting him leave for consistent football is the right decision for all parties given that he isn’t in the manager’s plans.

However, that £20m price-tag could be the biggest hurdle in sealing a deal. Jones is only 28 and has his best years ahead of him. Hopefully, he gets the right club to continue his career and reclaim a spot in the national team.
