Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe expected to be released by Manchester United next summer

Manchester United are expected to release Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe from the club in the upcoming transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 31-year-old English national has played just two games for the Red Devils in three years due to a persistent knee problem. On the other hand, the 25-year-old defender, who joined Stoke City on loan in January 2023, has not featured for the Old Trafford side since the 2021 Europa League final.

Jones has not trained at United all season. Injuries have plagued the English national’s time at the club over the years. The defender had signed a new contract with us in February 2019, which is going to end in the coming months (transfermarkt).

Tuanzebe has also had his fair share of bad luck with fitness issues. The England U21 international’s current contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season (transfermarkt).

Other players who could leave the Old Trafford side next summer include Ethan Galbraith, Ondrej Mastny and Charlie Wellens.

Tom Heaton’s contract is going to conclude in the coming months as well. Therefore, United have a decision to make regarding the veteran shot-stopper.

Our reserve shot-stopper Nathan Bishop is also approaching the conclusion of his deal with the Old Trafford side. Mateo Mejia, who plays as a striker for the U21 side, also has an uncertain future.

Erik ten Hag has turned things around admirably at the Red Devils. Therefore, the gaffer needs to be supported after such a massive clearout from the club.

As for our backline, Jones and Tuanzebe’s departure will not affect us much because they have not played a part in the team for some time now. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the two defenders after their stint in Manchester.
