“You need to be very careful what you say”- Scotland teammate slams refs after Man United star Scott McTominay’s goal ruled out

McGinn was disappointed after Scott Mctominay’s goal was ruled out for offside

According to ESPN, midfielder John McGinn was upset by the decision to disallow Scott McTominay‘s goal. Scotland thus squandered their opportunity to secure a spot at Euro 2024 next year.

Scotland continue to lead Group A with 15 points after six games, three more than Spain, who have one more game remaining. Clarke’s team can qualify for the championships in Germany next summer with just one point from their final two games, and they can even do it on Sunday if Spain defeats Norway.

In Seville, with both the teams yet to score a goal, McTominay’s superb free kick in the 61st minute beat Spain custodian Unai Simón. Nevertheless, after receiving a VAR recommendation to review the pitch-side monitor, Dutch referee Serdar Gözübüyük disallowed the strike.

McGinn said after the game in an interview (Viaplay):

“You need to be very careful what you say. I think everyone watching that game tonight from a Scotland point of view, wherever you were, it just felt like we weren’t getting any 50/50 decision — it made it very difficult against a world class team. He [the referee] changed it [his reasoning on the VAR check] in the game, which is the annoying thing. It means it’s not clear and obvious. Is he going to save it? No chance. No goalkeeper in the world is going to save that. However, at one point he’s said it’s a foul, realises it isn’t a foul, so changes it to offside.”

At first, it appeared on the stadium’s big screen that Jack Hendry’s foul on Simón had resulted in the goal being disallowed. Hendry was in an offside position and obstructing play, as UEFA later acknowledged.

McTominay’s duties appear to be more complicated on a global scale. Instead of getting the ball back from his centre-backs and taking part in build-up play, he makes late runs into the penalty area and gets on the end of crosses.

When a midfielder like McTominay produces centre-forward goalscoring numbers, the absence of a productive No. 9 doesn’t seem to matter. Another factor contributing to his recent success is his athleticism. We think we can have a successful season if he continues to play with the same passion for United as he does for his country.

His ability to play in an offensive position for both his club and his country has previously been demonstrated. He probably won’t maintain his Scotland form for the rest of the season given that he hardly gets game time at the club.

We hope that McTominay continues this emphatic form as this is very much needed to bolster United’s midfield creativity. However, we can’t always hope for him to save us in the dying minutes of games.
