England manager Gareth Southgate explains the omission of Manchester United star Mason Mount from the English camp
England head coach Gareth Southgate talked to reporters about the exclusion of Manchester United star Mason Mount. The 24-year-old will be training at Carrington instead of joining his English teammates during the October international break.
The England international was out with injury during the September international break. Mount suffered an unknown injury during the Red Devil’s 2-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League game.
United signed Mount from Chelsea for an initial £55m that can rise to £60m based on his success and appearances. The Englishman was the first summer signing for the Red Devils as they needed a midfielder with energy and creativity.
Southgate spoke to reporters (h/t Manchester Evening News) about Mount’s omission ahead of England’s games against Australia and Italy. He said:
“Physically he’s [Mount] getting back up to a level. He’s been an important player for us and we like him a lot. But I didn’t think he’d done enough to be ahead of the others at this moment in time.”
United manager Erik ten Hag has deployed Mount in a deeper role contrary to his attacking role at Chelsea. The 24-year-old earned his way into the Chelsea senior team from their academy and spent 18 years at the club. Mount won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup with the London club.
The England international has missed five games this season with injury and featured in six matches in all competitions. Mount has failed to impress with his performances and only contributed one assist for United so far this season

Ten Hag trusts his priority signing of the summer and therefore, Mount’s place in the starting role is not in jeopardy. However, Mount needs to level up his performance in order to earn a return to international settings. The English midfielder’s role is pivotal for United as they seek to resurrect their form after the international break.
