Raphael Varane has his say that Manchester United will prevail in the Champions League
According to the Manchester Evening News, Raphael Varane believes that Manchester United have the chance to prevail in the Champions League this season.
United has only won the European Cup twice in their history, and they have only won two knockout games since reaching the Champions League final in 2011. That remains the only time United has made it past the quarterfinals.
Varane said in the press conference:
“Yes. I think so. I think the qualities in the squad, as I say, that competition is difficult, you have to take care of every detail, but we have a team with quality, with a good mentality.
“Yeah, we have to make some improvements, it’s not the start of the season we expected, but I still believe we have the quality to compete with the best teams in the world.
“I think we have the quality in the squad to play and to win that competition but we have to improve and tomorrow is a great opportunity to get the first points in the competition, to move forward and improve.”
After the 2011 final loss to Barcelona at Wembley, Varane rejected Manchester United in favor of Real Madrid. He has won the Champions League four times with the most successful side( Real Madrid) in the competition, but he still thinks United can contend this year. It’s great to have such a positive mindset, especially when the club is going through a tough phase.
United will host Galatasaray on 3 October after falling to Crystal Palace 1-0 on Saturday, dropping us to 10th in the Premier League rankings. It was our fourth league defeat of the season and our worst ever start to a top-flight campaign since 1989-90.
United will now play without Lisandro Martinez due to his broken metatarsal. His partnership with Varane at the back produced some fruitful results last season. However, with his absence, it might get difficult to manage knowing how difficult it has been since the start of the season.
On the other hand, Manchester United winger Antony could be available for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Galatasaray, according to manager Erik ten Hag.
Now, it remains to be seen how United cops with the challenges without many prominent players in the team. Looking at United’s current form, it looks very tough for the club to live up to what Varane had said ahead of the clash against Galatasaray.
