Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez expected to undergo another surgery

According to Fabrizio Romano’s tweet on X, Manchester United are expected to be without Lisandro Martinez for at least 2-3 months due to his broken metatarsal.

Lisandro Martinez will have a second surgery on the same leg after already having had one in April. United stated on Friday that the Argentina international would be sidelined for an “extended period” due to a deterioration of a foot ailment he first suffered against Sevilla.

Lisandro Martinez clearly seemed to be playing through pain for much of the first few games this season. He did not seem like the “Butcher” he was for the Red Devils last season and it was clear that something was wrong.

Erik ten Hag said on Friday about the concerning injury (Daily Mail):

‘I think it was a big difference the Licha Martinez in the last games and the Licha Martinez we have seen in the first season here.

‘He will add to the team, a really strong contributor to our levels and if already one player drops a level, the team performance will be lower.’

It has now been determined that he will have another surgery in order to solve the problem once and for all. The former Ajax defender, 25, is said to have taken painkillers to play in the games against Brighton and Bayern Munich, and fresh tests confirmed that the fracture had not healed properly.

Martinez made 45 appearances in all competitions for the club last season, scoring once. In February, he also started the Carabao Cup final, which Manchester United won 2-0 against Newcastle at Wembley Stadium.

He joins a number of United players who are presently out with injuries, including Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Sergio Reguilon and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This obviously exacerbates the club’s predicament, as United’s defensive capabilities are jeopardized.
