As revealed by the club’s official website, Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon on a loan deal this summer.

The Red Devils have been actively seeking to bolster their squad with a left-back due to injuries affecting Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Both senior defenders would be unavailable for a considerable amount of time. Brandon Williams has also left the club on loan, leaving Erik ten Hag with only Diogo Dalot at his disposal.

The versatile Portuguese was given the responsibility to cover that position in their recent 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Considering these issues, it was expected that the club would be looking to sign a new defender on deadline day.

However, their pursuit of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella failed to bear fruit. United then switched their attention to Tottenham’s Reguilon and have successfully completed the move.

United will not have to pay a transfer fee for the 26-year-old, and there won’t be an option to make the move permanent in the next summer transfer window. However, the club will cover his entire salary.

Currently, the defender is set to be on loan with Ten Hag’s team for the 2023-24 season, but there is a clause that allows for the loan deal to be terminated in January.

Reguilon was linked with a move to Man United in 2020 when it was evident he would be leaving Real Madrid. However, he ultimately chose to join Tottenham.

The Spanish full-back has participated in 67 matches for Spurs across various competitions, with 52 of those appearances coming in the Premier League. Notably, he spent the previous season on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he played in 12 matches.

Shaw’s injury setback may keep him sidelined for ten weeks, while his backup, Malacia, has been dealing with a knee problem and hasn’t played this season. This leaves Alvaro Fernandez as the only specialised left-back option for Ten Hag.

Dalot is once again expected to retain his position when United face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.

While Reguilon may not be a high-profile signing for the fans, the manager needs defensive cover and would be happy with the player at his disposal.

Given the financial constraints at Old Trafford, making a quick move for the experienced left-back appeared to be the most viable option.

It’s a win-win situation for both sides, as Spurs will get the player’s wages covered for a short period of time, and United may opt to terminate the player’s contract in January if Shaw and Malacia recover by then.
