Manchester United star Sergio Reguilon will return to play against Sheffield United and fill the vacant left-back spot
Manchester United left-back Sergio Reguilon is ready to make a return against Sheffield United after missing out on four matches. The 26-year-old sustained an injury in the 0-1 Premier League victory against Burnley on 24th September.
United manager Erik ten Hag substituted the Spain international in the 79th minute of the game. Reguilon started at Turf Moor with an illness as the Red Devils had no natural left-back apart from him.
The Red Devils have played new midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as the make-shift left-back in the absence of Reguilon. Long-term injuries have sidelined the other left-back options, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with unknown return dates.
Amrabat received criticism for his performances at the left-back position during the consecutive losses against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray. Ten Hag opted to play centre-back Victor Lindelof in the last game against Brentford before the October international break.
United hold the 10th position in the Premier League table and suffered defeats in their first two Champions League Group A matches. The Red Devils have six losses in 11 matches that they’ve played so far this season in all competitions.
Ten Hag suffered a major injury crisis in his senior team that played a huge role in their poor performance. The Dutchman lost Shaw earlier in the season and Malacia has not even featured in the pre-season fixtures.
United signed Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal during the summer deadline day. The Spaniard impressed the Red Devils fanbase with promising performances before injury.
Manchester Evening News reported that the 26-year-old participated in team training at Carrington on Thursday. Reguilon’s return will be a massive boost for United as they look to resurrect their collapsing season.

United will host Copenhagen after their Sheffield visit and the Champions League game is a must-win for the club. The Red Devils’ main vulnerable area is the defence as they have conceded 19 goals in 11 matches. Ten Hag needs to make sure that the team will be more fortified going forward. The United staff would have preferred to introduce Reguilon into action gradually, but the team doesn’t have the luxury of time.
