As revealed by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton might extend his stay at the club beyond this summer, as manager Erik ten Hag is hesitant to let him depart.

The English shot-stopper is keen on discussing his future with the United manager. Luton Town have shown interest in the veteran player this season.

The 37-year-old joined the Red Devils from Aston Villa in 2021 but has only made three appearances for the club since then.

Heaton is eager to play regularly, as he has no plans to retire soon. Man United have signed Andre Onana after David de Gea’s departure, and Dean Henderson is expected to be sold to Nottingham Forest.

The club has been linked with goalkeepers Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce and Zion Suzuki from Urawa Reds. However, these potential signings might be hesitant to join United unless they are guaranteed a starting position at the club.

Heaton remained in David de Gea’s shadow last season, with no expectations of a change in the upcoming season. However, the Spaniard’s exit hasn’t changed things, as the club has signed Andre Onana instead.

During United’s pre-season tour of the United States, Heaton played in a friendly match against Arsenal and delivered an impressive performance.

As a former Burnley star, Heaton is regarded as one of the best backup goalkeepers in the league, which explains why manager Ten Hag is reluctant to let him go.

The Englishman’s presence brings much-needed experience and quality to the team, making him a valuable asset. His abilities are such that he would easily secure a spot in the starting lineup of most mid-table Premier League teams.

However, Heaton is eager to play more regularly, considering he has only played in three games over the past two seasons. It is now up to Ten Hag to provide him with more game time.

Due to financial constraints and Dean Henderson’s future uncertainties, United’s goalkeeping department may face a shortage of experience and quality. In our opinion, the Dutch boss should believe in the veteran keeper.

Heaton is a capable shot-stopper, displaying strong command in his penalty area. However, he is not as proficient with his feet as Onana.

Nevertheless, he could still improve this aspect of his game, and the manager can provide him with opportunities in Cup games to keep him motivated.
