Sunderland agree on a deal with Manchester United for the sale of the 23-year-old English keeper

As revealed by the Northern Echo, Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop is set to join Championship club Sunderland this summer.

Despite being part of the Red Devil’s squad, the English star has not made any senior appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are eager to strengthen their squad and are interested in acquiring Bishop to bolster their goalkeeping options.

The keeper’s time at Old Trafford seems to be coming to an end after joining them from Southend United three and a half years ago.

Despite initial hopes of making an impact and potentially breaking into the first team, it didn’t work out for the player, and he is set to leave without making any appearances for the senior squad.

Bishop has made a name for himself in the lower tiers of the English Football League and had a significant role at Mansfield, a League Two side, during the 2021-22 season.

His contributions helped Mansfield reach the play-off final, but they were defeated by Port Vale. Following that, Bishop returned to Man United for the last season and played nine times for the U21 side.

Bishop’s future at the Theatre of Dreams looks uncertain as his contract expires in 2024. Consequently, the club is looking to sell him, and Sunderland have shown interest in signing him.

The Championship side are keen to strengthen their squad after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. For Bishop, this presents a wonderful chance to revive his career and gain valuable experience in the lower-tier league.

The Black Cats have agreed on a deal with United. Both clubs are expected to quickly reach an agreement without any last-minute complications in the negotiations.

On the other hand, United are eager to strengthen their goalkeeping department following the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The Red Devils are facing a lack of depth in the goalkeeping position after David de Gea’s departure.

Tom Heaton has also attracted interest from other clubs and had agreed on a loan move before Erik ten Hag intervened and blocked the transfer following De Gea’s exit.

During the pre-season tour of the US, Heaton has been heavily involved in the team’s matches. On the other hand, talks are ongoing with the Urawa Reds to potentially bring in Japanese youngster Zion Suzuki.

However, there are uncertainties regarding Suzuki’s role at the club, as the Japanese keeper has rejected the chance to join the English giants.

Bishop‘s future at Old Trafford looks bleak, and a move away to resurrect his career seems likely. Sunderland could offer him the opportunity for much-needed exposure.

However, there are concerns about whether the youngster would secure the first-choice goalkeeper position at Sunderland due to his limited experience.

It would be difficult to displace their top-choice keeper, Anthony Patterson. However, it would still be better for the player to move to the Championship club rather than be sidelined at his current club.

Bishop needs to raise his performance level in order to prove his worth to manager Tony Mowbray. There is still a long way to go for the young shot-stopper.
