Casemiro enjoys being a leader amidst Manchester United captaincy uncertainty

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro likes being a leader on the pitch amidst the uncertainty of who the Old Trafford side’s captain will be next season.

As things stand, Harry Maguire has the armband. However, the England international has been tipped to step down after falling down the pecking order at the Red Devils. To that end, Bruno Fernandes is seen as the favourite to succeed the England international.

But speaking to the media via The Sun, Casemiro has expressed his desire to be the captain. The Brazil international wants to be an example on the pitch for other players to follow.

“I like having this role. Being a leader, caring, being like a father, going after things. I like to set an example, be the first to arrive. I like to play this role.

“The captain’s armband is nothing more than a symbol but the players have the responsibility to talk to the referee, to the players. I like to be that example player.”

It looks like the 31-year-old has seemingly tipped his hat to be in the consideration to lead United onto the pitch next season. The former Real Madrid star is no stranger to the role, having carried the armband for his national side.

Casemiro is one of the most experienced players in our squad at the moment. The Brazilian spent several successful years in Madrid, winning several La Liga and Champions League trophies, before moving to Manchester.

In the previous campaign, the 31-year-old was key to the Red Devils’ success. He added much-needed quality to our engine room. In the absence of the midfielder, Erik ten Hag was unable to get the best out of the team.

Maguire was relegated to the bench last season by the Dutch manager. As a result, Fernandes donned the captain’s armband for most of the 2022/23 term and arguably is a natural fit.

The Portugal international is often a tenacious and vocal figure on the pitch for us. Unfortunately, he also cuts a frustrating figure at times when things are not going our way.

Ten Hag has a big decision to make. Casemiro and Fernandes are two quality options to choose from. Therefore, it is a good headache to have for the gaffer.
