Tony Coton, the goalkeeping scout at Manchester United, is “not privy” to the situation around the contract of David de Gea at the Old Trafford side.

The Spaniard’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire in the coming days. However, there is uncertainty whether the shot-stopper will put pen to paper on fresh terms, with talks between the two parties dragging on.

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Coton, who spent the better part of his playing career featuring for Watford and Manchester City, praised the 32-year-old’s quality. However, he does not know whether the former Atletico Madrid star will stay.

“He’s [De Gea] been one of the most consistent goalkeepers around the world really, not just Europe and the Premier League.

I don’t know whether he’s signing a new contract, I really don’t know, I’m not privy to that at the moment.”

De Gea has been a consistent fixture of the United squad for more than a decade now. Having signed the Spaniard in 2011, the Red Devils have counted on him season after season.

There was a point in the veteran goalkeeper’s career where he was considered one of the best in the world. Unfortunately, that changed after the 2018 World Cup.

Subsequently, the 32-year-old became error-prone. A few years back, it looked like Dean Henderson would replace the former Atletico shot-stopper as the number one.

However, over the last two campaigns, De Gea has been impressive. But while the Spaniard’s displays have been great, under Erik ten Hag, he has left a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet.

As a result, the team have seemingly not played up to the mark. The 32-year-old has looked uncomfortable playing the Dutch manager’s style of play.

Therefore, while it looks like the right time to move on from De Gea, without him, we only have Henderson and Tom Heaton in our ranks. However, the 26-year-old is set on making a move to Nottingham Forest this summer. Thus, we evidently need to tie down the Spaniard or get a new number one.
