Premier League rivals Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Manchester United target and Ajax Amsterdam centre-back Jurrien Timber, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Gunners have submitted a second bid worth around £40 million to acquire the services of the Holland international. They have already agreed personal terms with the versatile defender.

Mikel Arteta’s team have reached a consensus with the player to put pen to paper on terms until 2028. The 22-year-old is keen on making his way to the North London side in the ongoing transfer window.

Last summer, the Red Devils were linked with a move for Timber. However, in the end, the centre-back ended up staying at the Eredivisie outfit.

The Holland national made his way through the youth ranks at Ajax. Under Erik ten Hag, the defender developed and thrived, often playing alongside the Old Trafford side’s Lisandro Martinez.

United signed the Argentina international in the summer of 2022. Since then, the 25-year-old has become a key player for the Red Devils, forming a formidable partnership with Raphael Varane.

Unfortunately, the French national has been injury prone since his move to Manchester from Real Madrid. In the previous campaign, the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof had to deputise on a number of occasions for the 30-year-old.

However, towards the end of the previous campaign, the Sweden international put in some admirable performances when covering for the injured Martinez. The 28-year-old proved himself as a reliable backup option.

But Timber is young and one for the future. The centre-back was also moulded by Ten Hag. Unfortunately, it looks like Arsenal, who struggled last season after William Saliba was sidelined, will get a hold of the Dutch national’s signature soon.
