Luke Shaw “embarrassed” after Liverpool thrashing of Manchester United

Manchester United star Luke Shaw feels “embarrassed” after Liverpool beat the Red Devils 7-0 in the Premier League on Sunday (5 March).

We went to Anfield, which is historically a tough ground to visit, for the North-West derby. After an encouraging display in the first half, the Old Trafford side crumbled after the break as the Merseysiders recorded their biggest win in a competitive match versus the Manchester-based club.

Speaking to Viaplay (h/t Manchester Evening News), Shaw was left bewildered by United’s performance against Jurgen Klopp’s team. The left-back apologised to the fans for the Red Devils’ display.

“It’s hard to explain this. I think the standards where we have been at, it was nowhere near it. I feel embarrassed for the fans and the people who were watching for us. I can only apologise.

“It’s not going to be easy watching this back. But he [Ten Hag] is going to make us watch it back, and show us what we need to learn from this embarrassment.”

The Old Trafford side went toe-to-toe with Liverpool during the initial stages of the fixture. At around the 25th-minute mark, both Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were handed great opportunities to beat Alisson Becker.

Unfortunately, the Portuguese and the England international were unable to capitalise and the Manchester-based club later rued those missed chances.

Towards the end of the first half, the Maerseysiders broke the deadlock and found the back of the net. Cody Gakpo was the one responsible for giving the Anfield side the lead.

After the break, United immediately found themselves two down after Darwin Nunez’s goal. And Gakpo’s strike in the 50th minute seemed to flatten the Red Devils’ players.

Subsequently, from then on, it was as if the Old Trafford side forgot how to defend. Mohamed Salah and Nunez got a brace and in the end, Roberto Firmino deepened the misery with his goal.

Shaw should feel embarrassed about the display. The England international, among others, were not at their best. In the second half, the 27-year-old looked frustrated and made major errors in the defence. In a derby against Liverpool, the players should not down tools until the final whistle.
