Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini attracting ‘interest’ from Manchester United and Chelsea
Manchester United, along with Premier League rivals Chelsea, have been credited with an ‘interest’ in Atlanta youngster Giorgio Scalvini, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are among several teams keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old. With his performances in Italy, the centre-back is considered one of the most promising defenders in Serie A.
Scalvini made his way through the youth ranks at La Dea. In the previous campaign, the youngster broke into the Bergamo-based club’s senior side.
However, this season, the centre-back has established himself as a starter. He has made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing an assist. The defender also has three caps for Italy.
Graham Potter’s team have struggled at the back in the current campaign. The Blues signed Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer of 2022 to bolster their defence. However, the Senegal international has been underwhelming in West London.
Subsequently, Chelsea bought Benoit Badiashile in January. The former AS Monaco star has been impressive alongside Thiago Silva in the few games he has featured in so far. Potter can also call upon Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah.
As for United, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been Erik ten Hag’s preferred duo in the backline. The Argentine and French nationals have formed a solid partnership at the Old Trafford side.
However, as a result, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been relegated to the bench. The two have found game time hard to come by under the Dutch manager.

Therefore, it would not come as a surprise if our captain or the former SL Benfica defender decides to leave the club at the end of the season for regular minutes. In that case, a young and talented centre-back like Scalvini seems like the right player to pursue.
