Juventus have joined Manchester United in the race for Giorgio Scalvini
Manchester United need new central defenders and have been linked to a number of names including talented Italian defender Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta.
When everyone in the squad is fit, Manchester United have one of the best centre-back partnerships in Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. The duo complement each other so well with respect to their strengths and weaknesses.
Sadly, for Manchester United though, both of them have been susceptible to injuries since the start of this campaign and Ten Hag has been unable to reply on either one of them. Thus, he has been forced to look at his backups.
Victor Lindelof is a very decent backup, but he is good when is just that – a backup. Expecting him to start week in and week out is a stretch. Harry Maguire did not start the season well but has shown a lot of promise in recent weeks.
Jonny Evans is a player who has featured much more than anyone expected him to. The former Leicester City centre-back is past his best and can only be considered to close out games that are a little bit edgy.
This makes it very obvious that the Red Devils need to invest in a central defender or two who is good enough to be a starter or provide competition to the starters and according to Manchester Evening News, they have chosen Giorgio Scalvini.
Whenever we look at top teams in the league or around the world, it is very obvious that they have at least three starting quality centre-backs for two positions on the team sheet. When you are Manchester City, you can afford to have even more than three and still manage to keep everyone happy.
Sadly though, United have only two and both injured at that. It paints a very sorry state of affairs for the Red Devils and Scalvini would be a perfect signing to be the third centre-back and push for a starting role.
