Newcastle United offered Barcelona forward Memphis Depay amidst Manchester United links
Premier League rivals Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Barcelona star Memphis Depay amidst links to Manchester United, according to Spanish outlet Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Cristiano Ronaldo recently departed the club midway through the season. The 37-year-old’s departure has dwindled Erik ten hag’s attacking options. As a result, the Holland international has been tipped to return to the Old Trafford side, with the Dutch manager looking to replace the Portugal international.
However, the Magpies are now leading the race for the 28-year-old’s signature. Eddie Howe, the manager of the Tyneside outfit, is a massive admirer of the forward.
Newcastle have been flying high in the current campaign. They are currently third in the league table. It seems like the Geordies are gunning for a spot in the top four.
The ownership change at the Tyneside outfit has also evidently helped them. They signed the likes of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Nick Pope in the recent transfer window to bolster Howe’s squad.
Depay joined Barcelona in the summer of 2021 as a free agent after a fruitful spell at Olympique Lyon. However, his time at the Blaugrana has not been the best this season. The Holland international has fallen down the pecking order and injuries have hampered his game time as well.
However, the 28-year-old featured for the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup and was decent. Louis van Gaal’s team made it to the quarter-finals but lost to the eventual champions, Argentina.
At the moment, Ten Hag has Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford at his disposal, who can play in the number nine position. However, the England international is not a natural striker.
