No injury concern for Manchester United defender Raphael Varane after being substituted in France vs Argentina
Manchester United star Raphael Varane was only fatigued as he was substituted towards the end of extra time in the France vs Argentina 2022 World Cup final, according to Manchester Evening News.
The 29-year-old started the fixture against La Albiceleste on Sunday (18 November) at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Didier Deschamps’ team lost the game in the penalty shootout after a valiant comeback.
Argentina took a 2-0 lead into the break after the first half. The South Americans dominated France for most of the game. However, around the 80th minute, Les Bleus were awarded a penalty which Kylian Mbappe converted.
A few minutes later, the Paris Saint-Germain forward found the back of the net once again to equalise. From that point on, it was a back-and-forth match between the two nations on the pitch.
Lionel Messi scored at the start of the second period of extra time to give Argentina the advantage. Subsequently, in the 113th minute, the United centre-back came off the pitch in place of Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate. However, Mbappe equalised from the spot once again just before the end.
Varane was pivotal in France’s run to the final. He played a part in every fixture in the Middle East for Les Bleus except the opening group stage game against Australia.
The 29-year-old has also been in fine form for the Red Devils this season. He signed for us in the summer of 2021 from Madrid. However, the defender’s debut campaign was underwhelming.
But Varane has formed a brilliant partnership with Lisandro Martinez in the Old Trafford side’s backline. The Argentina international, who was part of the World Cup-winning squad, has been solid alongside the French defender in Manchester.
