David de Gea fails to make preliminary 55-man World Cup squad of Spain amidst Manchester United heroics
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been left out by Luis Enrique from the preliminary 55-man World Cup squad of Spain. Of the 55 players, 26 will travel to Qatar to have a chance at lifting the coveted trophy for their nation.
However, the Red Devils’ number one will miss out on representing his country in the tournament that starts in November. Despite being a regular at the Old Trafford side, the shot-stopper has not been able to make the cut.
Enrique has selected five players for each position for the time being, according to AS (h/t The Sun). And it is surprising to see that the Spanish manager does not consider De Gea amongst the best with his current form in Manchester.
Those who have made the list include Premier League duo David Raya and Robert Sanchez, who play for Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively. From Spain, Getafe shot-stopper David Soria and Athletic Bilbao star Unai Simon have been selected.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizzabalaga is also in contention, although he is a backup option. The Blues shot-stopper has had a hard time in West London and has only found his place back in the Stamford Bridge side’s starting lineup in the last few weeks.
De Gea picked the Players’ Player of the Year award in the previous campaign at United. The 31-year-old was one of the only positives of an otherwise underwhelming season.
While the Spaniard had a shaky start to the 2022/23 campaign, he has since improved. And the shot-stopper has made some brilliant saves consistently for the Red Devils.
