Barcelona put Manchester United summer targets Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay up for sale
Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay, who Manchester United were interested in in the summer of 2022, have been put up for sale by Barcelona, according to Sport (h/t Express).
The Blaugrana have transfer-listed a total of five players ahead of the January transfer window. In light of their economic issues and Champions League group stage exit, Xavi Hernandez’s team need to raise cash.
Chelsea were also one of the clubs looking at the Dutch duo in the recent window. This would prompt a battle between both Premier League clubs to get a hold of the midfielder and the forward.
De Jong was pursued by United for a long time in the off-season. The 25-year-old was Erik ten Hag’s top target in the summer of 2022. The Dutch head coach managed the Holland international during their time together at Ajax. Unfortunately, he remained at Barcelona.
Instead of De Jong, the Old Trafford side got two additions to bolster the middle of the park in the recent transfer window. In total, the Manchester-based club made six signings in the summer of 2022.
Depay was also a player that both the Red Devils and the Blues were linked with. The 29-year-old only joined the Spanish giants from Olympique Lyon last year. However, the forward has fallen down the pecking order in Catalunya.
Christina Eriksen and Casemiro have made an immediate impact playing in United’s engine room. However, fans still feel the club needs to add more quality to challenge for titles.
Ten Hag currently prefers the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony in our forward line. Cristiano Ronaldo has fallen down the pecking order, while Anthony Martial has struggled to stay fit.

De Jong and Depay are quality players. However, if supporters had a choice, they would want the Old Trafford side to move for the 25-year-old midfielder.
