Olympique Lyon youngster Malo Gusto on Manchester United radar for the right-back spot

Manchester United are interested in Olympique Lyon right-back Malo Gusto, according to French outlet L’Equipe (h/t Metro). The 19-year-old has also attracted attention from other top clubs around Europe.

United are looking to sign a right-back before the transfer window concludes. Gusto is a name that is on the Manchester-based club’s shortlist. However, the Red Devils face competition from Barcelona.

The Blaugrana are keen on the 19-year-old’s signature. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have also asked about the France U21 international. However, Lyon want to keep hold of their youngster and offer him a new contract.

But the right offer from any of the interested parties, including United, could make the Ligue 1 outfit reconsider. An appropriate offer could tempt Lyon to cash in on Gusto.

United currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as options at right-back for Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese has pipped the England U21 international to a starting berth in recent times.

The former Crystal Palace star seems to be out of favour in Manchester. The 24-year-old lost a regular berth under Ralf Rangnick. And now, under the new gaffer, Dalot is the preferred choice.

Wan-Bissaka has failed to convince fans over the years. While his defensive qualities aren’t in question, the 24-year-old leaves a lot to be desired in the final third of the pitch.

Gusto had a breakout campaign last season. The 19-year-old featured 37 times for Lyon in the 2021/22 campaign. The France U21 international eventually established himself in Peter Bosz’s XI.

Fans feel the side needs more quality in the right-back spot. Gusto has a lot of potential. United have made a couple of defensive signings this summer, but we’ve still been shaky at the back, having lost our first two fixtures of the new season.

Tyrell Malacia has already arrived from Feyenoord on the left flank. It remains to be seen if Ten Hag now goes out and gets in a right-back as well.
