Transfer News: Manchester United set to submit bid for Olympique Lyon full-back Malo Gusto

Manchester United are ‘set to submit a bid’ for Olympique Lyon right-back and France U21 international Malo Gusto, according to Media Foot (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils are looking to bolster the right-hand side of the defence. As a result, Erik ten Hag has earmarked the 19-year-old to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Recently, the Dutch manager disclosed that the England U21 international had a future at the club. However, the Old Trafford side are still looking for a replacement for the former Crystal Palace star.

Gusto made his way through the ranks at the French side. The 19-year-old had his breakthrough season at the Ligue 1 outfit in the previous campaign, making 30 appearances in the league for Les Gones.

The right-back has once again been a pivotal player for Lyon this season. He has made 14 appearances in Ligue 1 for his club, providing an assist. The youngster has also played a bit further up the pitch for Les Gones on certain occasions.

Diogo Dalot has started in all but one game for United in the current campaign. The Portugal international has shouldered the burden since Ten Hag’s appointment.

Previously, the 23-year-old was a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Wan-Bissaka the first name on the team sheet. However, Ralf Rangnick’s arrival changed the 25-year-old’s fortunes at the club.

The former interim head coach preferred Dalot. Since then, the 23-year-old has cemented his place in the team. However, the Portuguese cannot be expected to start every game for the rest of the season.

Wan-Bissaka put in an encouraging performance against Burnley in the Carabao Cup. But if the club parts ways with the 25-year-old, Gusto’s age and potential make him a compelling option as a backup for Dalot.
