Transfer News: Leeds United to approach Manchester United for Phil Jones
According to Marca (h/t Manchester Evening News), Leeds United are set to approach Manchester United for forgotten defender Phil Jones.
Phil Jones joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 and has been one of the club’s longest-serving players in the current squad. Highly rated during his initial years at Old Trafford, the English centre-back has become a laughing stock in his latter years.
The 30-year-old made four solitary appearances in the Premier League this season with his appearance against Wolves coming 707 days after his previous one. With 228 appearances for Manchester United over 11 seasons, he definitely has a wealth of experience.
It seems extremely unlikely that Jones will feature in the first-team picture under Erik ten Hag and now Leeds United are being linked with a shock move for the English defender.
Unlikely connection?
Leeds United signing a player from Manchester United is generally not a transfer that is welcomed by either fans considering the rivalry between the club.
Approaching the Red Devils for a player who has not played much football in recent years seems even more shocking from the Yorkshire club’s perspective. That said, United should use this opportunity to move on the player.
It is safe to say that Phil Jones hasn’t had the sort of career that was envisioned for him when he was breaking through in English football. Injuries have not been kind to the defender and his performances have failed to inspire confidence.
Regardless, Jones is still only 30 years old and still has a chance to resurrect his career. A move away from Old Trafford to pastures new could do the Englishman a world of good and if he can manage to revive his career at Elland Road, then so be it.

United cannot expect a transfer fee of any significance for Jones but getting him off our books could just be an ideal solution right now. Even if it is to Leeds United, we must do it without hesitation. Phil Jones in Manchester United is a story of what could have been and that’s how it is likely to end.
