According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Brazilian giants Flamengo have opted against signing Manchester United star Andreas Pereira on a permanent deal this summer.

The 26-year-old spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at the Maracana and gave a decent account of himself. While his error proved costly in the Copa Libertadores final, he had a rather good season.

Pereira joined the Red Devils in 2011, initially making his mark in the club’s youth ranks. Winning the Denzel Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year Award in 2015 is by far his standout moment at the club.

The move to Flamengo was supposed to reignite what was a flagging career and act as an audition for a move elsewhere. While his performances picked up, it does not appear to have convinced Flamengo to splash the cash for his signature.

The Brazilian giants have no intention of sanctioning the money needed to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis. Pereira will now return to Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/we campaign.

Man United are currently in the midst of a rebuild under Erik ten Hag but there does not appear to be any role for Pereira to take up. The club remains open to selling him in the summer and it remains to be seen which teams make an offer for the Brazilian midfielder.

Any chance of changing Flamengo’s mind is also non-existent as they have already reached an agreement for Benfica winger Everton Cebolinha. He will pen a five-year deal with the Maracana-based club in a deal that will cost €13m plus add-ons.

The fact that they chose to spend more on another player than sign on Pereira is an indication of where their priorities lie. Man United will now hope that Pereira’s performances last season will attract some interest in him this summer.

More Manchester United News

Pereira has made 75 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, scoring a mere four goals and making five assists. It represents a poor return from a player who initially promised so much. Meeting the standards at a club such as Man United is no easy task and the Brazilian star’s predicament showcases just that.
