Transfer News: Nottingham Forest open talks with Manchester United for Dean Henderson

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, newly promoted Premier League club Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Manchester United to sign talented English goalie Dean Henderson on loan with an option to buy for £20m.

A product of Manchester United’s famed academy, Henderson joined the club’s ranks in 2013, progressing through the youth ranks before showcasing his abilities during a loan move to Sheffield United. He has since then been a part of the first team at Old Trafford but struggled to dislodge David de Gea as the number one.

Chances have been hard to come by for the 25-year-old English goalie this campaign due to David de Gea’s form and Henderson being restricted to just five appearances all season across all competitions where he has conceded seven goals.

With a season like this doing no favours to his career, the English goalie has been linked with a move away from the club next season. It has now emerged that Nottingham Forest want to sign the player on a loan with an option to buy.

Bad luck?

To say that this season has been frustrating for the English international is an understatement. Having won the starting berth from the Spanish goalie towards the end of last season, injuries and covid to Henderson meant that United had to start the season with de Gea between the sticks and the Spanish shot-stopper has had a resurgent season, to say the least.

What was shaping out to be a very promising career at Old Trafford has suddenly hit a roadblock and there seems to be absolutely no way that Henderson will get a run in the first team in the near future unless something drastically changes.

That said, a loan move to Nottingham Forest seems to be a good solution for all the parties involved. Manchester United will be able to loan out a talented player who they might not want to lose yet and if they wish to keep the player, they might not agree to a buy option in the deal.

Nottingham Forest, having just been promoted, will benefit a lot from having a goalkeeper of Henderson’s calibre and he could go a long way in helping the club in staying up in the English top flight. For the player himself, he will undoubtedly be the undisputed starter at Forest and regular game time is just what he needs at this stage of his career.

Dean Henderson is definitely a quality goalkeeper who just happens to find himself at Manchester United at the wrong time when they have a beast in David de Gea between the sticks. If the English international can go out on loan and continue his development, he could still have a future here once the Spaniard’s career comes to an end.

With the player also supposedly keen on making the Nottingham Forest deal happen, it seems like a very wise deal for us. Let’s hope it goes through without any hiccups and if it helps Hendo in his bid to be England’s starter in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
