Transfer News: Newcastle United increasingly hopeful about signing Manchester United linked Christian Eriksen
According to Northern Echo (h/t Daily Mail Online), Newcastle United are increasingly hopeful about signing Manchester United linked Christian Eriksen at the end of this season. He is currently plying his trade with Brentford, where he has enjoyed quite some success since returning to playing football.
Eriksen had joined the Bees on a six months contract in the January transfer window. There were doubts regarding his future following the cardiac arrest he suffered last summer. However, he has repaid the faith shown by Thomas Frank’s side, having excelled since joining them.
That has seen the Dane getting linked with a move elsewhere this summer. Man United are one of those destinations, while Tottenham Hotspur have also been touted as a potential option. However, it is Newcastle who are growing more optimistic about signing him when his contract expires after this term.
Do Man Utd need Eriksen?
After taking a look at our current set of options in midfield, we could use someone like the 30-year-old in our ranks from the next campaign onwards. After all, Paul Pogba is nearing the end of his contract, and he seems set to depart Old Trafford on a free transfer. Replacing Pogba would not be easy, but Eriksen can be a solid alternative for him.
Without Pogba’s presence, our technical options take a hit as Fred and Scott McTominay are not the most creative midfielders in the league. As for Donny van de Beek, we are still not sure what lies in store for him past this summer.
In any case, adding Eriksen would certainly bode well for the depth and quality of our midfield. But the competition for the Dane doesn’t help. Apparently, the Magpies are also willing to match or even make an improved offer when compared to their rivals to get their hands on the midfielder.
While the Premier League star would be available on a free transfer, it won’t be easy for them to go toe-to-toe with the Toons, who have been financially boosted by their recent ownership takeover. We cannot take them lightly at all as they could use these boosts to further uplift their status as they have done since their January transfer business.

Eriksen, at 30, has shown at Brentford that he can play at the top level despite the cardiac arrest episode during the UEFA Euros last summer with Denmark. Signing a midfielder of his quality, whose exploits with Tottenham are well known, on a free transfer would certainly be a tempting prospect.
But we hope that by signing a new manager, a proper project will be built for the long term where Eriksen can play a part moving forward. Whether that will be enough to convince the Bees ace to join us or not remains to be seen.
