Fabrizio Romano reveals that Manchester United are working to finalise paperwork to announce Erik ten Hag

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United are working on finalising the paperwork this week to announce Erik ten Hag as their next permanent manager, ahead of the new season.

United have been on the hunt for a new manager ever since they sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late last year because of the poor results that the team put out under the reins of the Norwegian. He was never able to deliver a trophy during his tenure, even losing the UEFA Europa League final in 2021 to Villarreal on penalties.

The club then appointed Ralf Rangnick as the new head coach on an interim basis until the end of the campaign, tasked with guiding the side back up the Premier League table and securing a top-four finish after the team slipped down the points tally in Solskjaer’s final season.

The German is expected to give up his position in the summer to make way for a new permanent boss, and the Manchester side seem to have agreed upon hiring ten Hag from Ajax Amsterdam due to his stellar record with the Dutch giants.

Final details needed

Romano revealed that United are now working on the last stage of ten Hag’s appointment, busy preparing contracts and finalising paperwork this week in order to announce the Dutchman as their new head coach as soon as possible.

It is said that sources close to the 52-year-old consider his announcement as a matter of time, given that only the final details regarding the coaching staff he wants to onboard and the agreement with Ajax to release him from his commitments with the Amsterdam side are needed.

ten Hag has had an amazing career in Holland with Ajax, leading them to back-to-back Eredivisie titles and domestic cup competition triumphs. The manager is currently on course to win a domestic double with the Dutch giants, winning a hat-trick of league titles and the KNVB Cup in the coming weeks.

In comparison, United have gone through multiple managers since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, and have won only the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Europa League in the past few years. While Louis van Gaal was able to deliver the FA Cup, Jose Mourinho got us the League Cup and Europa League trophies in his first season at the club.

However, our last trophy came in 2017, which means that it is now five years that we have gone without a title. For a club known for having a rich history of winning silverware, we have gone off the pace since 2013 and need a stable presence to lead us to a new era of success in the near future.

ten Hag seems to be the perfect candidate to fix our troubles, at least on paper. The Dutchman is capable of building league-winning sides and delivering regular trophies in Holland, both of which are major issues plaguing the team at the moment. Whether that form can be replicated in England is anyone’s guess.
