Fabrizio Romano reveals that Manchester United forward Antony Martial still has a role under the manager Erik ten Hag
Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano clarified the role of Manchester United forward Antony Martial under the manager Erik ten Hag. The 27-year-old is playing in the last season of his current contract with speculations surrounding his future since the summer.
Martial suffered with nagging injuries throughout last season and failed to impress the new United manager. United signed Rasmus Hojlund during the summer transfer window to lead the attack in the current season.
The France international has failed to capitalise on the chances that he received this season with sub-par performances. Martial acts as a backup to the first-team players while receiving limited opportunities for playing time.
Speaking to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column, Romano explained the current role of Martial under Ten Hag. He said:
“Anthony Martial is another player fans have been keen to understand more about ahead of January, and from what I’m told he remains part of the rotation under Erik ten Hag, he’s not out of the project. Martial, like some other player at United, remains on the same list: if they receive an important proposal, he could leave. Otherwise, they’re happy to keep him as part of rotations.”
United signed Martial from Ligue 1 club AS Monaco during the summer of 2015. The Red Devils broke the record for the highest transfer fee paid for a teenager at that time.
Martial’s tenure with United involved numerous injuries and periods of inconsistencies as the Frenchman struggled to justify his price tag. Last season, the France international missed 27 matches due to injuries that made Ten Hag question his reliability.
The 27-year-old has featured in 15 matches this season in all competitions while only contributing one goal and an assist. Fans and football pundits have criticized the Frenchman for his lack of productivity since signing for United as a teenager.

The critics argued that Martial’s goal tally is not worthy of a player donning a United jersey for so long. The Frenchman has made 313 appearances for the Red Devils while only scoring 89 goals and providing 54 assists.
The Red Devils need to sell players to fund new signings to avoid any FFP sanctions. Ten Hag is using Martial as a rotational player but the Frenchman has not made any significant impact.
