Fabrizio Romano provides contract update on Manchester United defender Luke Shaw

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United are preparing to discuss a contract extension with defender Luke Shaw in the coming weeks to keep him at the club for a few more years.

The Englishman joined the Red Devils in 2014 as a teenager and has since gone on to become the club’s first-choice left-back. A senior player in the team now, he faces competition for his position from Alex Telles. The Brazilian has been used in games where Shaw has either been rested or ruled out due to injury.

The 26-year-old has been hugely impressive since making the move to United from Southampton, with his displays at the club level earning him a spot in the England national team. He was a crucial part of the Three Lions side that made the final of the UEFA 2020 Euros, with Shaw even managing to score in the summit clash against Italy.

The Manchester side seems to be keen on retaining some of their best players with an eye on the future, with the club making moves to open talks with stars regarding a new deal or a contract extension towards the end of the current campaign.

June 2024 option for Shaw

Romano confirmed that after the Old Trafford outfit agreed on a new deal with midfielder Bruno Fernandes, they are looking to negotiate with Shaw regarding his future. A discussion regarding a contract extension is set to be had soon, as reported by the Italian transfer guru.

The club currently have an option to extend the defender’s contract until June 2024, with the same clause included in forward Marcus Rashford’s current contract. It remains to be seen whether they intend on extending the academy graduate’s deal in the coming weeks as well.

A new manager is expected to take charge of the first team from next season onwards, but even before his arrival, United have taken steps to ensure that they keep hold of stars that they believe are necessary to the team’s success in the future.

It reflects highly on players like Fernandes and Shaw that the Manchester side has approached them to open talks regarding a new deal to stay at the Theatre of Dreams, indicating their importance in the squad.

With Romano reporting that Rashford too has a clause similar to that of Shaw’s in his current deal, only time will tell if they plan to keep hold of the Carrington graduate. He has not been in great form over the past couple of seasons, but United fans are aware of the talent that he has.

Once Shaw’s contract is extended, we hopefully see the club move on to keep a few more important players within the team. We need our best players to perform under our new manager next term to break our trophy drought and return to the glory days.
