Manchester United keeper David De Gea set to miss Tottenham Hotspur game due to Covid-19 positive result
According to The Sun, Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is set to miss the match against Tottenham Hotspur due to a positive Covid-19 result. His absence would be a major blow for the hosts since he has been their starting choice option for the majority of this season.
De Gea has tested positive for the coronavirus in the build-up to the highly anticipated clash against Tottenham later today. The Premier League fixture will take place at Old Trafford, and Dean Henderson seems set to take over the starting spot as a result of this setback.
That being said, the first choice Man United star has tested negative since then but is not yet cleared to play against Spurs. The Red Devils would now need to get a clearance from the league officials to field the Spaniard later today. He would need to provide a clear PCR test ahead of the league clash to feature in today’s game.
Damning blow!
The 31-year-old’s absence would undoubtedly give us a massive headache for sure since he has arguably been our best player this season. That is because others have not been consistent to the same length, which showcases the importance of our number one goalkeeping choice.
Fortunately, the Man United superstar could still make it in time if the PCR test turns out to be negative. That being said, we are in a race against time at this moment since there is not much time left for the match to start against Antonio Conte’s side.
We are assisted by the fact that it is not mandatory for fully vaccinated people to self-isolate, which could save us some time in our attempt to get a clearance. However, Ralf Rangnick could still decide to stick with Henderson even if the league approves De Gea’s selection.
That seems reasonable since the virus could take a toll on the body after all. Moreover, due to inadequate information, we may not know the extent of its effect on De Gea. As such, there is always the risk of him not being at his usual best due to the coronavirus.

While De Gea has been immense for us, Henderson is not a pushover either. The latter can certainly deputise in such a fixture, although there are some concerns about his match sharpness. After all, he has not been utilised regularly enough to maintain a healthy wavelength. Only time will tell who will protect the posts for us as we near the kick-off time.
This also serves as a chance for Hendo to reclaim the number 1 spot in De Gea’s absence, as he did last year. But it remains to be seen if he can hold onto it this time around- something which certainly has the capacity to impact his future at Old Trafford ahead of the summer transfer window.
