Transfer News: Manchester United denied Everton from inserting an option to buy Donny van de Beek
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United had refuted an attempt from Everton to include a buy option for Donny van de Beek in the loan deal. He has moved to Goodison Park temporarily for the remainder of the season in an attempt to get more playing minutes.
The Toffees were eager to insert an optional clause to buy Van de Beek at the end of the season. However, the Red Devils were not interested in entertaining such requests and completely rejected the proposal. This update could indicate that they may have future plans for the midfielder despite his lack of game time at Old Trafford.
Having signed the 24-year-old for £35million plus £5million in add-ons, Man United made a sizable investment in the ex-Ajax ace. It is unknown how much the Toffees may have been willing to pay for him in the summer, but it was clearly not enough to sway United’s head.
Future plans for Donny?
Ralf Rangnick is only managing the team on an interim basis which opens up the possibility of a new manager next summer. It does make sense why the Manchester club is keen on keeping hold of the Dutchman in such a case. After all, different managers have different systems and their own preferences when it comes to their starting XI.
With Paul Pogba’s future also uncertain at this point, we would not want to lose another star as it could put us in a precarious situation. Pogba has entered the final five months of his current deal at Carrington and has not penned a contract extension just yet. The club has to safeguard their interest in a worst-case scenario which could explain the situation with the Man United loanee.
It is good to see the board making reasonable choices regarding the club’s future. A rushed decision is not what we need at this instant as we do not know who will lead the project we are building right now.
Truth be told, the Dutch midfielder has never found favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rangnick and remains on the fringes of the starting XI. For us to turn down Everton’s proposal for a possible permanent deal, perhaps the amount may have been underwhelming, or the club genuinely sees him as a player who could play a role at Old Trafford in the near future.
He should now look to make his mark under Frank Lampard, who is the new manager of the Merseyside club. It remains to be seen how this situation would turn out in the months to come ahead of the next season.
