According to the club’s official site, Manchester United starlet, Tahith Chong is closing in on a return as he continues his recovery from injury at the club.

The 22-year-old was originally sent out on loan to Championship side Birmingham City last summer. However, he sustained a thigh injury in November and then returned to Old Trafford, cutting short his stay at St Andrew’s.

Chong’s time at Birmingham was a fruitful one as he put in several good performances that saw him stand out. Playing week-in, week-out would certainly have helped his cause but unfortunately, luck had other ideas.

Thankfully having undergone surgery, Chong is now on the mend and appears to be coming along nicely. He was captured on camera as he continues his rehabilitation at Carrington on Monday.

As things stand, he is a few weeks away from making his return. He however appears to be on the mend and it is in his best interests to ensure that the 22-year-old is completely fine before being thrust into action, even at the reserves level.

Chong appears to have made a striking impression on Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer who is ready to welcome the Dutchman back to the club in the future. Whether it is something that can be explored in the summer transfer window remains to be seen.

It is a shame that the Dutchman could not continue his development, especially since it would have provided him with some much-needed minutes on the field. Hopefully, he will return fully recovered and will be raring to go.

Chong joined United from Dutch side Feyenoord in 2016 and won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2019.

Our youth players will certainly form our club’s backbone in the coming years. In the age where transfer fees and wages for quality players seem to be on an unstoppable rise, the value of a young player from the academy breaking into the first team is invaluable. But at 22, time may be fast running out if he wants to lay claim to a spot in our senior team’s matchday squads on a regular basis.
