Transfer News: Barcelona and Newcastle United target Manchester United forward Anthony Martial in January
According to The Times [Subscription Required] and Diario Sport (h/t ESPN), Barcelona and Newcastle United have identified Manchester United forward Anthony Martial as a transfer target in the January transfer window. The striker has already expressed that he wants to leave Old Trafford in search of more minutes, having fallen down the pecking order.
Newcastle are in search of a replacement for Callum Wilson, who has got injured, and they have been subsequently linked with Martial. They are currently engaged in a relegation battle and have just brought in Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid to boost their chances of survival in the Premier League. The Blaugrana club are also plotting to facilitate a loan move for the United forward in the winter transfer window.
Barcelona have signed Ferran Torres from Manchester City but are still interested in bringing another striker to their squad. Alvaro Morata of Juventus is another option, whereas Ralf Rangnick has ruled out a move for Edinson Cavani this month. Sevilla are also keeping tabs to sign Martial, and they have held talks with Man United over a loan, but no agreement has yet been finalised.
Get rid of him
We have to ensure that the 26-year-old will leave Old Trafford soon. There is no reason to keep him at the club if he is keen to play elsewhere. Martial’s contributions on the field have also been rather underwhelming.
Getting rid of the France international would reduce the wage bill and assist us in focusing our finances towards areas that need improvement. That’s not all, as we could also get a decent sum through in the form of a loan fee or a permanent transfer if clubs are willing to go down that route.
The Magpies are a wonderful prospect in boosting our chances of earning some money, but they may not be an attractive option for the Red Devils ace due to the league standing. The Catalans are obviously the better club, but their financially bleak situation would not suit us in getting a decent sum.

Rojiblancos would be a more neutral option, but it remains to be seen how the situation pans out surrounding the negotiations we are engaged in currently. The Manchester club desperately needs some additions in the centre of the pitch to assist us in attaining a top-four finish this term.
As such, the France attacker’s potential departure could help us in that regard by raising some money to solve the instability in midfield. Let’s hope that we find a solution to his future soon so we can focus our attention on solving the issues in the squad.
